Abstract:

Social validity has long been recognized as a core dimension of Applied Behavior Analysis, tracing back to the foundational criteria set out by Baer, Wolf, and Risley (1968). Social validity—broadly defined as the social significance of goals and the acceptability of procedures and outcomes—helps evaluate whether behavior-analytic interventions produce changes that matter to clients and their communities (Wolf, 1978; Kazdin, 1977). This presentation examines social validity from the viewpoints of clients, caregivers, and clinicians, showing how each stakeholder contributes distinct perspectives on treatment success. It also underscores clinicians’ ethical responsibility to balance scientific rigor with person-centered care so that professional practices remain responsive to stakeholder values and real-world needs (Carr & Nosik, 2017).

Learning Objectives:
1. Identify three main components of social validity: the significance of goals, the social appropriateness of procedures, and the social importance of the effects of the changes produced.
2. Identify the perspectives of clients, caregivers, and clinicians in evaluating the social significance of treatment goals, procedures, and outcomes.
3. Understand ethical guidelines to balance scientific rigor with person-centered care when designing and implementing interventions.
